Q-CELL - Quantum CELL

Proof-of-concept for a compact, fully fibered rubidium vapor cell.

QUANTUM STAKES

Whatever the technology, photonic or neutral atoms, photonic components are the key to ever more efficient, compact, and embeddable quantum systems. One of the first building blocks of great interest lies in the realization of compact, fully fibered cells containing rubidium vapors. This could be used for a wide range of applications, for stabilizing lasers on hyperfine lines, to new sensors based on atoms in Rydberg states, to quantum transponders and memories for telecommunications.

A TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT

As part of this project, ALPhANOV has to realize a vacuum sealing bench compatible with the filling of hot rubidium vapors into a hollow-core fiber.

The technical challenges of this approach are :

  • To achieve coupling between a single-mode optical fiber and an HC-PCF fiber with the lowest loss rate, while maintaining the cell's hermeticity,
  • Fill an HC-PCF fiber with Rb,
  • Vacuum-seal an HC-PCF fiber,
  • Check cell quality: maintain optical quality, maintain hermeticity.

The image shows a low-loss coupler between a single-mode fiber (right) and an HC-PCF (left), hermetically sealed and fitted with a lens.
